As part of Arts Milton’s effort to highlight the various cultures within our unique community, we are thrilled to offer “Crafting Culture.”

 “Crafting Culture” invites talented Miltonians to lead an interactive presentation that features a creation from their own culture. Subject matter will range in genre, focusing on fine art, culinary creations and heritage.

Kris Yun Xie’s Chinese Paper Cutting Workshop

Embark on a journey into Chinese traditional culture with Kris Yun Xie’s paper-cutting workshop on February 4th. As a Shanghai Folk Artists Association member, Kris brings a fusion of tradition and innovation. Inheriting the precious art of Chinese paper cutting, Kris explores the subtle intricacies within square inches, showcasing the charm of this ancient culture. Join her as she blends traditional elements with new ideas, offering a unique perspective on paper-cut art and extending its reach to a global audience.

Materials required for the workshop

  4. Printer paper or coloured paper for craft use(20 lb)
  5. Glue
  6. Plastic sheet (folder)

Art on Kicks

Omar “Oms” Hopkinson – Sneaker Art Workshop

Omar Hopkinson is a multidisciplinary creator and an Ontario College of Art and Design alumni. A veteran live performance painter, his works appear at events and institutions such as The Artist Project and The Royal Ontario Museum. He has adapted his creations for various audiences and collaborated with organizations such as RedBull, Footlocker, and The United Way. He has over 20 years of experience creating culture, engaging communities, and collaborating with municipalities to bring art experiences to the public. He currently serves as a board member with Mural Routes and is the Mississauga Arts Council 2023 award winner for Outstanding Public Art. He continues to connect with communities while advocating for underserved communities.
At a high level, participants will learn to customize a sneaker/shoe design and will be facilitated through the theoretical steps of designing a sneaker and tips and tricks in customizing their own footwear. They will learn how to prepare the sneaker, the application of paint, markers, or other materials, the protection of the sneaker, and what tools are needed to achieve a strong outcome. As a creative element, each participant will have the opportunity to design a custom sneaker on a printable template, where they can apply some of the tips and approaches provided by the presenter.

  4. Acetone/Rubbing alcohol for cleaning shoe before use.
  5. Leather shoes/ canvas
  6. Transfer paper
  7. Good lead pencil
